Supreme Court Upholds Election of Seven Governors, Including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State

The Nigerian Supreme Court on Friday gave its final verdict on electoral disputes of the governorship elections of the March 2023 in seven states of the federation.

Each of the cases had five-member panel of the apex court that attended to the appeals.

They dismissed all appeals that were filed against the candidates who emerged from the election as elected governors of Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Plateau, Abia and Bauchi States.

Governor Abba Yusuf, of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) had his electorial victory upheld despite the fact that the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Abuja both sacked him.

Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang whose election was affirmed by the Plateau State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, but dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, got an affirmation of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme court upheld the election of Bala Mohammed as the elected governor of Bauchi State while dismissing the appeal filed by Sadique Abubakar, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 2023 election.

Alex Otti, was duly elected as the governor of Abia State as declared by the Supreme Court in its judgement that was delivered by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji because it dismissed all the appeals against his victory.

The election of Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was upheld as the duly elected governor of Zamfara State by the apex court when it set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had declared the Governorship Election as inconclusive and ordered a re-run in three Local Government Areas of the State.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court also unanimously affirmed the victory of Governor Francis Nwifuru as the winner of the governorship election of March 2023 in Ebonyi State.

Also, the Supreme Court upheld the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State as earlier ruled by the election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal in the state.
