Nigeria Police Force Cracks Down on Indiscipline and Misconduct, Issues Sanctions Against Erring Officers, Senior Officers Under Scrutiny

In a resolute move to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance towards any form of indiscipline.

Emphasizing the police mandate to serve and protect with honour, IGP Egbetokun affirmed that breaches of core values will be met with decisive action to maintain public trust and ensure justice.

All reported cases of misconduct have been thoroughly investigated, resulting in appropriate sanctions.

Several officers have faced disciplinary actions, with some cases still pending conclusion.

Notably, Police Inspector Adabo Mohammed has been dismissed following his involvement in criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, kidnapping, and corrupt practices.

Inspector Mohammed, along with five accomplices, robbed N29.8 million and kidnapped Ikechukwu Emmanuel Okafor, extorting a ransom of N4.4 million. The ex-officer has been charged to court.

In another case, Inspectors Osagie Efford, Semiu Agbekin, and Francis Ahuen of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) were demoted to Sergeants. They extorted N29.4 million from motorists in Abuja, an incident reported on social media by Harrison Gwamnishu. Following a thorough investigation, the stolen money was returned, and the officers were demoted after an orderly room trial.

Senior officers are not exempt from scrutiny, with several subjected to Force Disciplinary Committee hearings to address allegations of misconduct. These actions form part of a broader initiative to implement comprehensive reforms within the NPF, aiming to strengthen internal oversight, enhance training on ethics and community policing, and improve transparency in disciplinary procedures.

IGP Egbetokun assures the public that these measures are taken with utmost seriousness, underscoring the NPF’s dedication to fostering accountability and respect within all ranks, ensuring officers serve with integrity.
