President Tinubu Calls for Stronger Regional Integration to Deepen Democracy in Africa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized the importance of strengthening regional economic communities in Africa to foster deeper democracy and accelerate development.

Speaking at the Summit on the State of Democracy in Africa in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, highlighted that Nigeria’s experiences have shown that increasing democracy is essential to addressing poor governance.

Tinubu called for the revitalization of sub-regional blocs such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), East African Community (EAC), and Southern African Development Community (SADC).

These organizations, he noted, are crucial for enhancing intra-African trade, economic growth, and job creation, all of which are necessary for maximizing the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The President stressed the need for regional bodies to focus on reducing trade barriers, promoting sustainable growth, and investing in human capital development.

He also pointed out the importance of addressing food and energy security, youth employment, and poverty alleviation to ensure greater prosperity across the continent.

Addressing concerns about recent democratic setbacks due to military coups in several West African countries, Tinubu underscored the necessity of empowering regional blocs to establish well-funded military forces to counteract military coups and terrorism.

He urged African leaders to adhere to constitutional principles, ensure credible elections, and strengthen autonomous institutions through the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo also spoke at the summit, advocating for a re-examination of the democratic models inherited from colonial powers. He argued for a contextual form of democracy that reflects Africa’s unique cultural heritage and contemporary challenges.

Additionally, UN Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Amina Mohammed highlighted the role of women and youth in strengthening democracy.

She emphasized the need for effective implementation of laws, accountability, and investment in democratic institutions to sustain democracy in Africa.
