Osun State Government Commits to Promoting Agricultural Produce Market

The Osun State Government has assured the Executives and members of the Southwest Commodities Farmers Organization of its commitment to promoting the market for agricultural produce in Osun State.

Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo, made this known while responding to the requests of the organization’s Osun State Chapter, under the chairmanship of Alhaji Rauf Okunade Adeyemo, and other members of the Executives who paid him a working visit in his office on Thursday.

The Commissioner, who referred the organization to the Ministry of Agriculture for other benefits, asserted that his ministry (Commerce and Industry) will assist the organization in the commercial aspect of their activities. This, according to the Commissioner, involves marketing their commodities with acceptable standards within both their organization, market women and men, and by extension, members of the public.

According to the Commissioner, “While I apologize for my inability to meet you earlier than this because of our schedule of work, I must commend your bold efforts to let the government know your challenges as an organization. And you can be rest assured that Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke is ever prepared to put smiles on your faces.”

“We will create a reliable market for you, where all your commodities will be exchanged for money as appropriate. Gone are those days when someone else would usurp your powers by dictating prices for your own products,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of the organization, Alhaji Adeyemo, had lamented how market women usually frustrated farmers’ efforts by fixing prices for their products without any recourse to them.

According to Alhaji Adeyemo, “Market women always frustrated the efforts of farmers. They always wanted to dictate prices of products to the farmers, which is at a loss to farmers. This is inappropriate and unacceptable.”

He charged the Governor Adeleke’s administration to come to their rescue without further delay. “The government should kindly intervene so as not to allow the market women to enslave us any longer.”

He also charged the government of Osun State to bring about a uniform measurement and price in the markets across the length and breadth of the State.
