Senate Urges Army to Deploy Modern Equipment Against Insurgents

To prevent further suicide bombings in Borno State and other parts of the country, the Senate on Wednesday called on the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to deploy modern technological equipment in the fight against terrorists.

The Senate also rejected a resolution seeking to oversee funds previously appropriated to former service chiefs for the procurement of arms and ammunition.

The rejection followed a motion raised by Senator Ali Ndume concerning the recent suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State, and the urgent need to address the menace.

During the debate, Senator Adams Oshiomhole proposed an additional measure, suggesting that the Senate should not only seek to provide more funds for the Army but also rigorously monitor the procurement process. He argued this was necessary due to the actions of previous service chiefs who allegedly misappropriated public funds for personal gains rather than purchasing security equipment and modern technology.

However, when put to a voice vote, the majority of lawmakers rejected the additional measure.

The Senate subsequently urged the Federal Government to ensure security agencies make concerted efforts to secure insurgent hotspots such as the Lake Chad Region, Sambisa Forest, and Mandara Mountains.

Over 30 people were killed and scores injured when suicide bombers attacked public places in Borno last Saturday.
